Great Tiger of old stalks the fairways at Augusta again

For five hours, it seemed like there had been a rain delay and they were running the endless
video vault from the Decade of the Tiger. This was the old Tiger Woods at Augusta National:
the red and black Sunday colours, the predatory stride, the scowl suggesting not the luckiest
guy in the world with its best job, but a man driven ferociously to shut out everything that
might interfere with his golf swing, even happiness.

Back then, the celebrations, although exuberant, had a mite of calculation, as if he was holding back a little message for any presumptive competitors: I’m enjoying this, but I’m coming to get you next time. For that decade until 2008, they took the hint, melting away in his presence.

But now, at the final putt, this sporting mesmerist had us back in 2019. The black cap came off and the truth was revealed, a middle-aged man who had lost his hair and his gloss, older than his 43 years, the mileage of suffering worn into his face. He used to hug Steve Williams, his caddy during his previous 14 major championships and a fellow who fancied himself as a co-celebrity. Now,........
