His daughter's life was stolen. But Aiia's dad expressed love for us anyway

The death of 21-year-old Aiia Maasarwe throws up so many issues we need to confront.

The security of young people travelling home after a night out, public lighting (which truly is dreadful in Melbourne) and whether gruesome details of murders should be made public all stand out. So will others as the court case unfolds.


But the way Aiia’s heartbroken dad Saeed Maasarwe talked about Melbourne and Australia and its people raises an irony that hit me as much as any of those.

And that’s the massive disconnect between how we treat those from far-away places, and how they often treat us.

Aiia’s killing was horrid, and I suspect only a parent who has travelled the same path can truly understanding the anguish and wretchedness that would come with Saeed’s journey to take his dead daughter home.

But despite that grief, caused by a brutal act........
