A forgiveness emoji may be cute, but will it change relationships?

This month, a charity group in Finland launched a crowdsourcing campaign for a new emoji. Outraged that we have symbols for "I’m angry" and "I’m nauseous" but not "I forgive you", they are attempting to launch a "forgiveness" emoji.

Ideas for the emoji include a bandaged love heart and clasped hands, and are designed to convey a message of "peace and mutual understanding across the world".

The call for a forgiveness emoji is long overdue. After all, our culture places enormous emphasis on apologies and forgiveness. It seems every week a public figure is asking forgiveness for a wrongdoing, and few of us have not apologised to, or forgiven, a loved one. As parents we are constantly teaching our kids to say sorry, and forgiveness is preached in all major religions.
