Why have we stopped spending? The answer is not in the bag

It’s been a long time since I was on the dole. Like, decades really. Coincidentally it’s been almost as long since our most basic, survival level welfare payment got any sort of real increase.

This, I suspect, and not plastic bag bans, is why the economy is limping along and consumers are reluctant to spend.

Of course I could be wrong.

It could be the punitively inequitable structure of the tax system that allows billionaires and multinational companies to pay no tax at all, while still putting their hands out........
