When the target is the journey

Last weekend it was my birthday, but I had started celebrating the night before.

I still managed to drag myself to the gym, out of a sense of guilt and obligation. Feeling dusty I felt I couldn’t stomach weights, and decided to go with the treadmill.

I felt it was a bit like voting for Theresa May’s Brexit deal – you know it will be terrible, but the alternatives seemed even worse.

I’d give it 10 minutes to show willing, then perhaps do some half-hearted stretches and head off for lunch. The next decision was to walk or to run. Run slowly I decided. Nice gentle job to clear away the cobwebs.

After those 10 minutes, I realised I hadn’t passed out, indeed I had hit my stride, so I decided to keep going a little more, and then some more.
