Should grown-ups eat jelly babies?

This thought crossed my mind as I indulged in one of Basset’s finest procured from the “British” section of my supermarket. I comforted myself with the knowledge that Dr Who in the Tom Baker incarnation had a penchant for the sugary treat.

Nonetheless it got me wondering whether food has not only a use-by date, but also a cannot be used before date. Is food age-specific?

Clearly, there is food for the extremes of age, in the form of chewing-not-required mush-like banana custard. Fairy bread should not form a part of a diet of anybody over the age of 10, with the exception of a highly ironic mid-life crisis party.

Olives have always been problematic for me. My reluctance to eat them as a young man provoked my father to........
