Would you risk your life for your job?

Many jobs put employees’ lives in danger. There are the obvious, such as police officers and firefighters, as well as the less obvious, such as loggers and labourers. The question, though, is this: what price would you put on your life? Or how much would you pay your employees for the risk to theirs?

For a certain proportion of the population, the answer is enough of a wage boost to justify that heightened risk. For some, the extra cash motivates them to undertake perilous activities most others would be less inclined to accept.

Take, for example, a truck driver. Of all the potential factors that could impact a truckie’s health – sedentary work, night shifts, long hours, unsafe roads, deadline pressures – fatigue is possibly the one that poses the greatest risk. Hence why truck-related deaths have increased by almost 90 per cent over the past couple of years and why many are resorting to drugs like........
