Diversity training: a waste of time?

There’s a concept known as diversity fatigue. It represents the point at which companies, "after talking about diversity for so long", wind up cultivating a workforce that’s "exhausted hearing about it".

That’s a quote, by the way, from the head of diversity and inclusion at Atlassian. Not exactly a person (or company) that in any way opposes inclusion at work.

They’re sentiments that have been echoed by consulting firm Mercer in a critical analysis released this year, which concluded that “on paper, many organisations are doing a lot to create better leaders and establish a more diverse and inclusive culture – but is it working? Overwhelmingly, the statistics say no.”

Some of those statistics have since been released by scholars from the University of Melbourne and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. They enrolled more than 3000 people across 63 countries in a diversity........
