Common factor which prompts calling in sick

Ever had one of those weeks? Nothing more needs to be said, really, than “one of those weeks”. Immediately you know what I’m talking about. Complete exhaustion. Inability to exert effort. Body pains and aches. Absenteeism.

I had one of those weeks last week. Coupled with a viral infection that had me placed on a drip in a foreign hospital, I didn't even have the strength to turn on my laptop let alone file a column.

But what causes many of us to have those kinds of weeks? Is it our own propensity for calling in sick? Or something to do with our employer?

In new analysis led by European researchers, more than 600,000 employees were tracked across 4000 firms. The scholars were fascinated by a particular statistic: when the average number of sick days of the top 10 per cent of culprits were compared to the bottom 10 per cent, the top 10 had absenteeism tallies that were larger by about 15 days.
