Footy fans aren't ready for the grand final to be shifted

We aren't ready for the AFL grand final to be shifted from the traditional Saturday afternoon time slot to the twilight zone. Not yet.

When the AFL Commission gathers on Thursday to formally decide whether the grand final should be played in living daylight or not, they ought to take the conservative position, which is to postpone the "inevitable" change until there is more acceptance from a football public that is showing signs of reform fatigue.

If the twilight grand final is indeed inevitable, as league CEO Gillon McLachlan contends, then it should be shelved for another 12 months and then revisited. There's no need to rush this reform through.

The time of the grand final isn't decided in a plebiscite/postal vote, in the manner of same sex marriage or whether Australia should become a republic (the republic was described as "inevitable" 25 years ago). It should not be decided simply by reader polls,........
