Dockers went into Hogan deal with eyes wide open

Fremantle knew what they were getting when acquiring Jesse Hogan. The Dockers had a thorough knowledge of Hogan's behavioural and psychological issues at Melbourne, just as they knew he arrived with a foot injury.

Their eyes were wide open as Hogan came into sight. They were rigorous in doing their homework, having candid conversations with Hogan about his lifestyle and the issues with anxiety that the club has made public this week.

Not for the first time, they punted on a high-end talent, hoping that the return home to his family would see him settle down, find greater happiness and, consequently, perform on the field consistently. Hogan came relatively cheaply, too.

Melbourne was a top-four team, with potentially several seasons of contention ahead, and yet was willing to offload a 23-year-old key forward who'd booted 47 goals in 20 matches. A player of that age, position and capability is almost never traded. What does that tell you?
