Is Captain GetUp a help or a hindrance to Tony Abbott?

It’s always worrying when someone signposts their own satire – if you have to tell people you’re being ironic, you’re probably not accomplishing it very well.

Hence I am not entirely convinced that Captain GetUp, the “satirical super-hero” created by conservative activist group Advance Australia, is actually satire. Or at least, that he is satirising what he is supposed to be satirising. Especially since what it is supposed to be satirising is unclear.

Confused? So is everyone, not least the superhero himself, who is named after his nemesis and wears his underpants on the outside.

Gerard Benedet, the national director of Advance Australia, unleashed Captain GetUp on Tony Abbott’s seat of Warringah last week to fight the hordes of orange-shirted (true) GetUp! activists working in the electorate to have the controversial ex-prime minister voted out.

Captain GetUp has the appearance of a Thunderbird character as seen through a psychogenic fugue. He has received an unmixed reception on social media, where he was subjected to what could be characterised as pure ridicule, more than satire.

But the savagery of social media lefties is only more fuel to the Captain GetUp rocket.

“We set the left on fire for a day,” Benedet told me. “These guys have been unchallenged for years.”
