Here isn't Australia's World Cup team: Short, Burns, Handscomb (c), Head, M Marsh, Wade (wk), Turner, Agar, K Richardson, Stanlake, Hazlewood.

You would fancy this XI to get through Australia's first match against Afghanistan in Bristol. But none will be there, because not one is in even the 15-man squad. Instead, they will be toiling away elsewhere in England for Australia A or county teams, shadowing the World Cup team and/or niggling for Ashes selection.

England this northern summer will be swarming with Australian cricketers. There will be at least 33 in official Australian teams, plus a handful in county cricket, all out to impress, and that is before the Ashes party is named. It will be Earls Court all over again, the First Fleet in reverse.

Most will be in notional form. Really, this goes without saying, since they've been picked for Australia or a subsidiary. But it is worth remembering that after a difficult series against India in the home summer, the Test team finished with a flourish against Sri Lanka, the one-day team won eight........
