The contenders: Who will coach Carlton in 2020?

3 0 0

A rare period of coaching stability is over. The same 18 men who started in senior coaching positions in 2018 also began the 2019 season, but with the home and away season having only just reached its halfway mark, there are already two coaching vacancies for 2020.

After almost a decade in partnership, North Melbourne parted ways with Brad Scott late last month, while Carlton sacked Brendon Bolton on Monday after a largely miserable tenure lasting less than four years.

It means not only that two clubs are looking for new coaches, but also that there is competitive tension in the marketplace.

Both clubs are only in the early stages of their respective hunts. Here are some of the potential candidates for the Blues job:

Brad Scott
As soon as news emerged that Scott was leaving Arden Street, he was immediately linked with the Carlton position, notwithstanding the fact Bolton remained coach at that point. Scott would come with a wealth of experience, having coached North in 211 games, finishing with a win-loss record of just over 50 per cent.

He hasn’t yet outlined his future plans, maintaining an open mind, although his former coach and mentor Leigh Matthews publicly encouraged Scott to take a gap year in 2020. Scott can polarise, but is still just 43, so could well have a long coaching career ahead of him at a second club.
