How can you stop AFLW Adelaide star Erin Phillips?

It is the closest thing to an impossible task in women’s football: stopping Erin Phillips. The Adelaide co-captain is favoured to win her second league best and fairest in three years when votes are counted on Tuesday night.

If not for injury last year it might be three from three.

The stats tell the story. In terms of averages per game, Phillips leads AFLW for contested possessions, is equal first for score assists, second for disposals, equal second for clearances and equal third for goals. It paints a scary picture for Carlton coach Daniel Harford ahead of Sunday’s grand final. So how do the Blues try to deal with her immense threat?

Trent Cooper would love to be walking in Harford’s shoes. But the Fremantle coach will have to wait at least another year after Carlton trounced the Dockers in last weekend’s preliminary final.

Cooper didn’t downplay the challenge that confronts Harford and the Blues on Sunday.

“What makes [Phillips] so great is her versatility,” Cooper told The Sunday Age.

“She’s basically as good a centre clearance player as there is in the competition and then she’s as good a forward as any player in the competition. So, it makes it really difficult to find the right player or players to play on her.”
