As a four-decade gamer, I can name a worse addiction

You could say I am a child of the gaming revolution. I was there when Pac-Man ate his first Ghost. I was there when the Space Invaders first invaded. I was first in line for the first Atari console, the first PlayStation, the Xbox, the Game Boy and the Wii.

Over four decades I have spent thousands upon thousands of pleasurable hours exploring dungeons, dodging asteroids, slaying dragons and refighting World War II.

Thus I feel I have some skin in the game in the debate over whether video games are addictive. Recently the World Health Organisation officially recognised “gaming disorder” as a mental condition.
