Sharing a locker room with Callan Ward and seething at Eddie Betts

I’ve gotten to thinking about a couple of my footy mates this week. One of them was badly hurt on the weekend, just as his team announced themselves as contenders for this year's premiership and the other is preparing for his 300th-game milestone, while his club is under siege and maybe even at the crossroads.

Footy can make a jumble of your emotions. I shared a locker room with Callan Ward for a number of years, I’ve watched him grow up. Eddie Betts and I were teammates for a fortnight, but we were opponents for many years.

Callan Ward is one of the best people I’ve met in footy. He came to us as a young kid, eager to do well, earn respect and remain true to his deep sense of morality. I’m not sure if I’ve played league footy with a more physically courageous player than Cal.

We dearly loved him when he was with us at the Bulldogs and we were shattered when the expansion club, the Giants, took him away. At the time, I think I described it like "our little brother moving out of the bungalow. We understand, but we are heartbroken".

It wasn’t just the kinship of teammates either. Just before Cal was taken from........
