Identity on the line as season approaches home straight

I drove down towards the Otway Ranges on Saturday and steered my way to the picturesque town of Birregurra. It's the sort of town that makes you want to write a novel in the tone and beat of the late Peter Temple. At least, it's the kind of place that does that to me.

As pretty as Birre is, I was running late. Former Age journalist Peter Hanlon coaches the Birregurra reserves, and a bunch of old friends had made the trip down the highway to support his boys and lend a helping hand.

There were even rumours earlier in the week that I might pull the boots on for the Birre Saints. Perhaps mercifully, the strict paperwork conditions weren't met on time.

The Saints were treated to a pre-match address by the great bard, Martin Flanagan. Later in the evening I listened to a recording of the speech, and it was everything you would want a Martin Flanagan rev-up to be.

It was three-quarter time in the twos before I arrived and joined my comrades. A cold can was thrust into my hand and I was settled. The Saints seconds had a stirring win against the undefeated top side, Simpson. The power........
