I wash the feet of the homeless and it moves me to my soul

At lunchtime every Maundy Thursday, the day before Good Friday, in my Loaves & Fishes Free Restaurant for the homeless, I wash the feet of as many homeless guests as I can. I do this in memory of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples before he was arrested, tortured and executed.

Each year, Reverend Bill Crews washes the feet of the faithful on Maundy Thursday, the day before Good Friday.

I started doing this in protest at the way the church had made a ritual of it where only goodly religious people did it to each other with all the church pomp and ceremony around it. To me that made the whole thing remote from life itself. Thank God the current Pope is not like that. I don’t think that is true of many of his predecessors.

I have been doing this every year since I first I started the Loaves & Fishes in Ashfield in 1989.........
