A quality curriculum is essential to Australian schools

What students learn in schools is vital to their future, and to Australia’s.

Yet public debates about curriculum too often descend into ideological battles or unsubstantiated claims about the next silver bullet. As a result, school systems do not share a common understanding of what we mean by “quality curriculum” or the role it should play to support effective teaching and learning.

Curriculum can be considered high quality when it helps produce teaching that drives student learning. This means it should support effective, research-based pedagogy; it should deliberately build student knowledge and vocabulary; and – critically - it should align to the standards set out in the Australian Curriculum or its state alternatives that indicate what students should know at different stages of........
