Senate shakes it up, House sticks to the good ol’ boys

In the Massachusetts House, the good ol’ boys are still very much in charge. (Well, okay, some of them aren’t so “ol’,’” and not all of them are boys, but they are all among Speaker Robert DeLeo’s inner circle.) While over on the Senate side, President Karen Spilka has given her team a much-needed shake-up.

At the end of the day, these legislative leaders have taken very different approaches. Hopefully, the new leaders they’ve selected can break the legislative logjam that left key pieces of legislation — like health care, housing reform, and the education funding formula — on the table at the end of the last session.

DeLeo, now in his 10th year as speaker, chose committee chairs who come largely from his comfort zone. Typical of those choices is new House Ways and Means Chair Aaron Michlewitzof Boston, who last year........
