Moscow welcomes Trump’s NATO stance while rejecting his Gaza plan
Russia has welcomed recent remarks made by former US President Donald Trump regarding Ukraine’s NATO aspirations, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov acknowledging Trump as the first Western leader to recognize the dangers of Kiev’s membership bid. However, Moscow has firmly rejected Trump’s proposal for Gaza, reaffirming its commitment to a two-state solution as the only viable path to Middle East peace.
On February 5, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Moscow supports Trump’s assertion that the push to bring Ukraine into NATO was a mistake. Speaking at an ambassadors’ roundtable on Ukraine, Lavrov highlighted that Trump’s remarks indicate a possible shift in Washington’s policy, which could lead to more serious discussions on NATO’s eastward expansion and the security concerns it has raised for Russia.
Trump, who has been vocal about his opposition to current US foreign policy, previously stated that he understands Russia’s opposition to Ukraine’s NATO membership. Speaking to reporters in Florida, he remarked that Moscow’s position had been “written in stone” for years but was ignored by President Joe Biden’s administration, a decision that Trump believes contributed to the ongoing conflict.
“Somewhere along the line, Biden said, ‘[Ukraine], they should be able to join NATO.’ Well, then Russia has somebody right on their doorstep, and I can understand their feelings about that,” Trump said.
