Belarus accuses Zelensky of fabricating apology claim
Belarus has strongly refuted Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s claim that Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko apologized for Russian missile strikes launched from Belarusian territory. Zelensky made the controversial statement during a three-hour interview with US-based podcaster Lex Fridman, released on January 5, 2025.
In the interview, Zelensky recounted an alleged phone call with Lukashenko that occurred during the early days of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which began in February 2022. According to Zelensky, Lukashenko admitted to the use of Belarusian territory for Russian military operations and missile strikes but sought to distance himself from these actions.
“He said, ‘It wasn’t me. The missiles were launched from my territory. Putin launched them,’” Zelensky stated, adding that Lukashenko had expressed regret and even apologized. “Those were his words. I have witnesses,” Zelensky insisted.
Belarus’ presidential office quickly dismissed Zelensky’s account, labeling it as baseless. Lukashenko’s spokeswoman, Natalya Eysmont, provided a different version of events. She confirmed that a phone call had taken place but attributed it to a spontaneous decision made by Lukashenko’s youngest son, Nikolay, who had Zelensky’s personal contact information.
Eysmont explained that the essence of the conversation revolved around Lukashenko urging Zelensky to take responsibility for the outbreak of the conflict. “Most of all, our president was saying that a conflict had broken out on the territory of Ukraine, on Zelensky’s territory, and that he, more than everyone else, will eventually have to bear responsibility for the deaths,” Eysmont told Russia’s RBK news channel.
Eysmont emphasized that Lukashenko had called for negotiations and categorically denied that any apology was made. “The president of Belarus has offered no apologies to Zelensky, simply because he had nothing to apologize for,” she stated.
The denial comes against the backdrop of Belarus’ strategic involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In the early stages of the war, Belarusian territory served as a launchpad for Russian troops and missile strikes targeting Ukrainian regions near Kiev. While Minsk insists it is not a direct party to the conflict, it has provided significant logistical support to Russia, as the two nations are bound by a mutual defense pact.
The alliance between Moscow and Minsk has deepened since the conflict began, with Russia deploying additional military forces and even stationing nuclear weapons in Belarus in response to escalating tensions with the West. Lukashenko has consistently aligned himself with Moscow’s narrative, asserting in 2023 that Ukraine “provoked” the hostilities. Despite this, he maintains that Belarus remains neutral, facilitating peace talks rather than participating in combat.
In the early months of the conflict, Belarus hosted three rounds of negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian representatives. These talks, however, failed to yield any substantive agreement and ultimately broke down by the spring of 2022. A subsequent summit in Türkiye also ended in failure, with both sides accusing each other of making unrealistic demands. The collapse of diplomatic efforts marked a significant escalation in the war, with hostilities intensifying in the months that followed.
The conflicting narratives surrounding the alleged phone call highlight the broader propaganda battle that has characterized the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Zelensky’s claim of an apology from Lukashenko serves a dual purpose: bolstering his image as a leader who can hold adversaries accountable while further isolating Belarus on the international stage.
For Belarus, denying the claim is equally significant. Acknowledging any apology could be perceived as an admission of guilt or complicity in Russia’s military actions, which would undermine Minsk’s insistence on its neutrality. By refuting Zelensky’s account, Lukashenko seeks to reinforce his narrative of Belarus as a facilitator of peace rather than an aggressor.
The dispute over the alleged apology has broader geopolitical implications. Belarus’ close ties to Russia have already drawn significant scrutiny from Western nations, leading to increased sanctions and diplomatic isolation. Any suggestion of regret or contrition from Lukashenko could weaken his alliance with Moscow, which has been crucial to his regime’s stability.
Moreover, the public disagreement between Belarus and Ukraine adds another layer of tension to an already volatile region. It underscores the difficulty of achieving any meaningful dialogue or compromise when trust between the parties is so deeply eroded.
International reactions to the controversy have been mixed. While some analysts view Zelensky’s statement as an attempt to gain leverage in the court of public opinion, others see it as a calculated move to expose cracks in the Russia-Belarus alliance.
For its part, the Kremlin has remained silent on the matter, likely viewing it as a bilateral issue between Belarus and Ukraine. However, Russia’s continued military reliance on Belarus suggests that Moscow will closely monitor any developments that could impact their partnership.
The incident also raises questions about the future of Belarus’ role in the conflict. While Lukashenko has so far managed to balance his support for Russia with efforts to avoid direct involvement in the fighting, his position could become increasingly precarious as the war drags on. The West’s ongoing sanctions and diplomatic pressure may further complicate Belarus’ stance, leaving Lukashenko with limited room to maneuver.
The disagreement over Zelensky’s apology claim highlights the complex and often contradictory dynamics at play in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. As both sides continue to wage a battle for narrative dominance, the prospects for genuine dialogue and resolution remain slim. For now, the episode serves as a stark reminder of how deeply entrenched the divisions have become, not only between Russia and Ukraine but also among the key players caught in the conflict’s orbit.
