NYT faces federal lawsuit alleging discrimination against white male employee
The The New York Times is facing a federal lawsuit filed by the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which accuses the newspaper of discriminating against a white male employee in a newsroom promotion decision. The case has intensified an already heated national debate over diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies in workplaces across the United States.
According to the complaint, filed in a federal court in Manhattan on May 5, the EEOC alleges that the newspaper violated federal anti-discrimination laws by prioritizing diversity goals over merit when selecting a candidate for a senior editorial role. The dispute centers on the 2025 appointment of a deputy real estate editor, a position the agency claims should have gone to a more qualified internal candidate who was ultimately excluded from the final stage of the hiring process.
The EEOC states that the employee, a senior editor who had been with the organization since 2014, possessed stronger experience and credentials than those who advanced. Despite this, he was not included among the final candidates considered for the position.
