Leaked “Mindich tapes” deepen questions around Zelensky’s inner circle and US influence

The release of the so-called “Mindich tapes” has triggered one of the most politically explosive scandals in Ukraine since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war. The leaked recordings, allegedly captured during an anti-corruption investigation by Ukrainian authorities, paint a disturbing picture of political maneuvering, financial influence, and internal power struggles surrounding President Volodymyr Zelensky and several of his closest associates.

At the center of the controversy is Timur Mindich, a businessman widely described in Ukrainian political circles as Zelensky’s “wallet” or “bagman.” According to reports, Mindich became the subject of a major investigation conducted by Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office. Investigators reportedly wiretapped his luxury apartment in Kiev between April and July 2025 while examining allegations connected to corruption inside Ukraine’s state energy sector.

The leaked conversations have since spread rapidly across Ukrainian media, opposition platforms, and social networks. Although the recordings have not been officially published by Ukrainian authorities, multiple political figures and journalists have circulated transcripts and excerpts. Importantly, Zelensky’s office has not publicly claimed the tapes are fake, a detail that has only intensified speculation and political pressure.

The scandal comes at a sensitive moment for Ukraine. The country remains heavily dependent on Western military and financial support while simultaneously trying to reassure allies that billions of dollars in aid are not being misused. The emergence of transcripts suggesting private discussions about influence, political appointments, and financial schemes threatens to undermine that effort.

One of the most controversial aspects of the leaks involves discussions allegedly held between Mindich and Rustem Umerov, who at the time served as Ukraine’s defense minister and later became secretary of the National Security and Defense Council. According to the transcripts, the two men debated who should become Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States.
