Renowned American journalist Tucker Carlson has accused the US government of obstructing his year-long efforts to interview Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. Carlson made the revelation in a video posted on December 3, while previewing his upcoming conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The allegations have reignited debates about media control, government interference, and the state of journalism in the context of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Speaking from Manezhnaya Square in Moscow, Carlson shared that his team had made persistent efforts to secure a conversation with Zelensky, exploring numerous channels and engaging directly with individuals close to the Ukrainian leader. According to Carlson, these attempts were blocked by the US embassy in Kyiv, which reportedly instructed Zelensky’s office to deny the request.
“We have also tried for over a year to get an interview with Zelensky, the president of Ukraine,” Carlson stated. “We have spoken to a lot of different people around him, had dinner with them. We have been in talks continuously.” Despite these efforts, Carlson claimed that the embassy, funded by American taxpayers, intervened to prevent the interview from happening.
Carlson further alleged that US officials explicitly directed Zelensky’s team to prioritize media outlets like CNN, while barring access to him. “You can talk to CNN. You cannot talk to us,” Carlson quoted the embassy as saying.
