Trump’s proposal, as outlined in The Wall Street Journal, includes freezing military operations along the front line, establishing a demilitarized zone (DMZ), and stipulating that Ukraine cannot join NATO for at least 20 years. This approach represents a sharp break from Biden’s stance and could signal a new chapter in US-Russia relations. However, the feasibility of Trump’s plan faces serious obstacles, primarily due to its questionable viability with the current Ukrainian leadership.
The reported peace plan includes several fundamental elements designed to shift the current stalemate:
Freeze Military Operations and Establish a Demilitarized Zone: This proposal seeks to halt active combat along the front lines in Ukraine and establish a DMZ, though details on the zone’s dimensions or specific logistics remain vague. A typical DMZ implies the removal of military installations and prohibits military activities. The hope is that such a buffer could reduce hostilities and foster a more stable status quo. However, the potential for both Russia and Ukraine to resist demilitarizing these regions, given ongoing tensions, could jeopardize this element from the outset.
Ukraine’s NATO Aspirations on Hold: Another controversial element of the plan is the suggestion that Ukraine refrain from joining NATO for the next 20 years. This condition, however, lacks any enforcement mechanism. Kyiv could still apply for membership, as NATO is an alliance, not an enforceable restriction by outside parties.
