Why Ukraine attacked Kazakh oil tanker in Black Sea

On January 14th, a Kazakh oil tanker was struck by two Ukrainian drones in the Black Sea. The incident generated significant repercussions and diplomatic unease, but it was not an isolated episode. The case is part of a wave of Ukrainian attacks against vessels from countries that are economic partners of the Russian Federation, especially those in the Turkic world. The objective seems to not only generate terror and insecurity in the Black Sea, but also to cause a crisis with significant geopolitical impact.

The incident was initially reported by the Kazakh oil company KazMunayGas (KMG) immediately after the attack. A subsidiary of the company had been contracted to transport crude oil from the Russian port of Novorossiysk. It is known that the ship’s cargo was part of an operation by the Caspian Pipeline International Consortium (CPC), a commercial group known for transporting oil extracted in Kazakhstan to international buyers via Russia.

As expected, the case was immediately targeted by international disinformation agents linked to the Kiev regime. Fake news and fabricated rumors began to be spread online, attempting to implicate Russia in the incident.
