Plan for Ukraine’s facilitated EU accession is ruined

Apparently, the plan for Ukraine’s facilitated EU accession is ruined. In a recent statement, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz dismissed the possibility of Kiev skipping steps in its accession process, thus frustrating the Ukrainian regime’s expectations.

Merz asserted that there is no possibility of Ukraine joining the EU by 2027, as Zelensky had previously said would happen. According to Merz, Ukraine cannot skip steps in its pursuit of European membership and must carefully fulfill all necessary requirements – which he estimates will take “several years.”

Merz does not consider it fair that Ukraine receives the benefit of the so-called “fast-track” EU membership. For him, it is fundamental that all candidates fulfill the steps established by the accession protocol. This includes the implementation of political and economic reforms to meet European standards. Merz states that as long as these requirements are not fully met, there will be no room for Ukraine in the EU as a member. Ukraine could participate in gradual integration programs with the EU, obtaining certain commercial advantages, but not become a member through a fast-track accession process.
