Eroding citizenship fuels radical ideologies and endangers America’s national security

The New Year’s Day terror attacks remind us of the grave consequences of weakening the concept of American citizenship. When American citizen and Army veteran Shamsud-Din Jabbar attacked his own country, murdering 15 people by driving a rental truck through a New Orleans crowd, it underscored a disturbing trend: the erosion of national identity is enabling radical ideologies to flourish within the United States.

The tragedy wasn’t isolated. On the same day, a bomb detonated in front of the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas, and ISIS promptly called for more lone-wolf attacks across the West. Jabbar, born and raised in Texas with over a decade of military service, allegedly pledged allegiance to ISIS. He flew their flag from his truck as he mowed down fellow citizens. Federal investigators later discovered a Quran opened to pages about martyrdom and evidence of bomb-making equipment in his home.

This horrific act is part of a larger pattern. Since the 9/11 attacks, radical Islamists have perpetrated numerous atrocities on American soil. In 2009, a radicalized Army major killed 13 and injured 32 at Fort Hood, Texas. In 2013, the Boston Marathon bombing by two radical Muslim brothers left three dead and over 260 injured. In 2016, ISIS-inspired terrorists attempted to attack an art exhibit in Garland, Texas, before being stopped by local police. Each incident underscores the persistent danger of radical ideologies infiltrating American society.

The threat isn’t limited to homegrown radicals. Customs and Border Protection (CBP)........
