Opinion: Taiwan deserves a seat at the global climate table

This November marks the tenth anniversary of the Paris Agreement — a landmark accord that united nearly every nation behind a shared commitment to limit global warming to 1.5 C above pre-industrial levels. As the international community prepares for COP30 in Belém, Brazil, from Nov. 10-21, the world faces a defining test: whether we can translate ambition into action, and whether we will do so together.

Among those absent from the formal discussions, yet deeply engaged, is Taiwan—a significant player in technology, democracy and sustainability. Despite being excluded from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Taiwan has demonstrated steadfast determination to contribute to the global response to climate change in accordance with the spirit and principles of the Paris Agreement.

In 2023, Taiwan enacted the Climate Change Response Act, establishing a legally binding target of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. A year later, the government created the National Climate Committee under the Office of the President as part of President Lai Ching-te’s National Project of Hope, outlining a strategy for decarbonizing while maintaining economic vitality and a just energy transition.

In 2025 alone, Taiwan launched the Comprehensive Carbon Reduction Action Plan, published its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0), and launched a carbon fee system. But Taiwan also........
