I tried Small Giants crackers made out of insects - here's how it went

Everybody loves freebies, don't they? So when a vegetarian colleague had to pass up the opportunity to review some new snacks from a fledgeling cracker company, I jumped at the chance.

There was, of course, one catch: these particular crackers are made from crickets.

New company Small Giants has received a £400,000 investment to bring more insect-based food to the UK market.

It makes snacks out of cricket flour and claims their powdered insect foods contain twice the protein and half the fat of others on the market.

And, to either your delight or disgust, they are on sale at select Sainsbury's stores in the city, including the Mere Green branch and on the Stratford Road in Shirley.

In scenes more akin to I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! than I'm used to, I had the pleasure of taste-testing them on a recent BirminghamLive Facebook Live.

As I begin my live taste test, I'm not quite sure what to expect. All I really know is they are made with mashed up bits of cricket and supposedly pack a punch.

I was sent three flavours by Small Giants: Tumeric and Smoked Paprika, Rosemary and Thyme and Tomato and Oregano.
