Boris Johnson is considering breaking a key promise in the Conservative Party’s 2019 general election manifesto.

His spokesman made it clear to journalists the Government might suspend the pensions “triple lock” this year. No decision has been made – but it’s unlikely he would admit even thinking about breaking a pledge unless there was a real chance it could happen.

The spokesman said: "Any decision on future changes to the triple lock will be taken at the appropriate time based on the latest data, and of course we will continue to support older people, while ensuring future decisions are fair with pensioners and taxpayers. No decisions have been made."
