Birmingham MP Shabana Mahmood to lead Labour conference debate on how party can stop losing

Covid-19 hasn’t actually gone away, but the nation appears to have taken the decision to ignore the virus for now. One example is the return of the annual party conferences, with politicians, journalists and activists meeting in person, following lacklustre "virtual" events last year.

Labour’s event takes place in Brighton next week, and the West Midlands will be well-represented.

One of the most interesting speeches will come from Birmingham Ladywood MP Shabana Mahmood, on Wednesday morning, just before party leader Keir Starmer’s big speech.

She’s leading a debate on the 2019 general election defeat, in her role as Labour’s National Campaign Co-ordinator. It's her job to explain how Labour can start winning general elections again - something it hasn't done since 2005.

Ms Mahmood is also involved in an ongoing review of all Labour's policies.

The explanation for the 2019 defeat has become the subject of fierce debate within Labour, as it's tied up with arguments about Jeremy Corbyn's leadership and the direction the party should take now Mr Corbyn is gone.

Supporters of the former leader argue that a left-wing approach proved extremely popular with voters. They highlight the result of the 2017 general election, which........
