Poor roads driving public to distraction

Anyone who has driven any distance in Northern Ireland can testify that many of our roads are in a very poor state. Earlier this year, this newspaper reported that there are 30,000 defects in need of repair on our highways. Yesterday, we reported the Housing Executive has a bill of half a billion pounds for repairs and maintenance to its stock.

Taken together — and never mind the state of so many schools where pupils are taught in temporary buildings — and a picture is building of a province with crumbling infrastructure.

The roads network is one of the indicators of the state of the economy, and few inward investors will see many of our roads as an inducement to set up here outside of........
