There was an alternative to mass murder, Michelle … it’s called politics

The clip of former IRA man Tommy Gorman weeping for the wasted lives of the Troubles should be compulsory viewing for anyone evaluating the use of political violence here.

“At the end of the day, what was it all about? I mean, what the f*** was it all about? It was a waste of time and a waste of life,” he said.

Gorman was one of seven republican internees who escaped from the Maidstone prison ship in the winter of 1972.

They camouflaged their faces and bodies by using black boot polish, and then smeared themselves with butter as insulation from the cold.

Wearing only their underpants, and socks on their hands, they swam to freedom through the icy waters of Belfast Lough.

Gorman went on to become an engineering officer in the IRA’s Belfast Brigade, making bombs that devastated the city. He ended up back in jail where he joined the dirty protest in the H-Blocks.

Speaking on the BBC Red Lines podcast broadcast on Wednesday, Michelle O’Neill said there was “no alternative” to the IRA campaign.
