The parties and reasons may have changed, but it’s the same old story over recalling Assembly

Oh how the tables have turned. Stormont’s top two parties are now playing exactly the reverse roles to the ones they had the last time our devolved institutions weren’t functioning.

Sinn Fein has secured the signatures of more than 30 MLAs for a petition to recall the Assembly on Monday. Michelle O’Neill says it’s important to “get down to business”.

So an attempt will be made to nominate a Speaker, and it will fail because the DUP won’t play ball. Sir Jeffrey Donaldson described Sinn Fein’s petition as “a stunt”.

Three years ago, his party was involved in a similar “stunt”, and its republican rival wasn’t shy about calling it out. In October 2019, the DUP secured the signatures for a petition to recall the Assembly........
