Return of DUP councillors is a show of confidence in Donaldson’s leadership

Sir Jeffrey Donaldson didn’t have the luckiest start as DUP leader. As he was addressing the media just after taking up the reins, North Down MLA Alex Easton was sending in his resignation letter.

On top of the councillors who had departed during Edwin Poots’ brief time in charge, it wasn’t a good look. Donaldson needed to stop the rot, and also try to bring back those who had departed.

There have been no further resignations under his watch, and the return of Glyn Hanna and Kathryn Owen is a show of confidence in his leadership.

If there is steady traffic in any party towards the exit door, it’s morale-sapping. It undermines faith in the leader and encourages others thinking of jumping ship to follow suit.

Owen and Hanna are very different types of local representatives, and Sir Jeffrey needs both within his party if it’s to........
