5 68 9

Jim Allister is the Nigel Farage of Northern Ireland politics. He has exerted enormous influence over a party which he doesn’t lead.

He has arguably caused the DUP to dump a leader and to collapse Stormont over the protocol.

Few believe Jeffrey Donaldson would be standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Jamie Bryson at loyalist rallies were it not for the electoral threat posed by the TUV.

Farage and Allister are both powerful orators who don’t shy away from confrontation. They are Marmite politicians. Just about everybody has an opinion on them.

Neither the TUV leader nor the ex-Brexit Party boss has any love for most of the mainstream media, particularly the BBC.

Although the similarities do not extend to their personal lives. Allister is a lot less colourful in that regard. He has been happily married to Ruth, whom he met at university, for 44 years.

He sat near Farage in the European Parliament and came to know him well. “He is a fantastic orator, he has it down to a tee.
