David Trimble was a hard man to like, but you had to admire his courage and convictions

He was no craic, he lacked charisma, and he was the most unlikely rocker joining Bono on stage. But this shy, awkward man who unexpectedly became UUP leader had incredible courage.

After he signed the Good Friday Agreement, David Trimble couldn’t walk the streets of his own constituency without a bodyguard. The vitriol and venom directed towards him was unrelenting.

As the Ulster Unionist Convention met at Belfast’s Waterfront Hall in May 2000, DUP supporters gathered outside sang:

What shall we do with the traitor Trimble,

What shall we do with the traitor Trimble,

What shall we do with the traitor Trimble,
