Confident Doug Beattie has shown unionists the way forward

Compare and contrast the two new unionist leaders, Sir Jeffrey Donaldson and Doug Beattie. The normally soft-spoken Sir Jeffrey, having snatched the disputed leadership of the DUP, has assumed the task of pretending to be a political tough guy, threatening to topple within weeks our already shaky Assembly, if he doesn’t get his way on the NI Protocol.

This is a tough and ludicrous stance, at a time that the EU negotiator on the Protocol, Maros Sefcovic, in conciliatory mode, has been in Belfast for a two-day intensive visit, trying to seek a compromise settlement on all the contentious inter-trade issues that have arisen post-Brexit.

He says that a victory-for-all solution is possible. He has declared: “I do not need any political victory here. I want to find a solution which would represent win-win — victory for all, first and foremost for the people of NI. That’s the goal.”

As Sefcovic pleaded for politicians here to “dial down the rhetoric” and engage in “constructive, calm discussion”, the DUP leader deliberately dialled up the rhetoric and was neither constructive, nor calm.
