PAPER TRAILS: Arkansas has its share of writers, musicians on 2025 ‘best-of’ lists

As 2025 comes to a close, publications near and far have been compiling their year-end best-of lists. Not surprisingly, some Arkansas writers and musicians have been singled out for their works.

"August Lane," by Little Rock novelist Regina Black, was among The New York Times' 100 Notable Books of 2025. The novel, which tells the story of high school sweethearts and country music collaborators August and Luke, was also included in the Times' 10 Best Romance Novels of the Year.

"The drama is off the charts in 'August Lane' -- traumatic back stories, neglectful parents, small-town secrets -- and the gorgeous prose makes for a luxurious wallow in emotional highs and lows," gushed critic Olivia Waite.
