Even a bad golfer can have a good day on the course


It is the beginning of a new year. For many of us, it is a time to pause and reflect on the highlights of the preceding 365 days. This will be a quick task for me because as per usual I am typically not overly burdened with highlight material. 2025 is no different on that score.

But I did have one accomplishment of relative note. At least it is the only one I can think of.

I made a hole in one last September.

I knew it was a good shot when I hit it. As in I got a pitching wedge high in the air and headed in the direction of the stick. It never occurred to me that the damn thing was going to go in. But it rolled in after two hops. And it wasn't one of those "hit the tree, bounce off the sprinkler head, hope-to-the-Good Lord" kind of fluky deals. I hit a real golf shot as if I meant to. And it went in. In front of appropriately incredulous witnesses even.

Boy, that's golf for ya. Let me explain.
