Opinion: Higher education is remaking the Navajo Nation

The closure of the Navajo Generating Station (NGS) in 2019 marked a significant economic shift on the Navajo Nation.

Some 90% of NGS employees were Navajo, providing essential resources for our government and serving as a significant economic engine.

The closure left many seeking new skills and presented us a major challenge — but also an opportunity.

As Education Forward Arizona’s report, “Billions to Gain,” shows, education is the cornerstone of economic and social progress. Nowhere is this more evident than on our great Navajo Nation today.

Post-secondary education plays a pivotal role in empowering our community, fostering economic development and preserving our cultural heritage.
