My fear: Arizona won't elect a Black woman president

All indications point to Kamala Harris taking the Democratic presidential nomination, but she’s going to face massive hurdles here in Arizona.

Can Mark Kelly help her clear them? And should he even want to?

Arizona has gone from red to purple to blue over the last 20 years, thanks in part to a well-documented population surge from California, Washington state and Black people from New York, Chicago and other Midwestern cities where voters tend to support Democrats.

It’s a huge part of why Arizona’s governor and both U.S. senators caucus with Democrats, and why a traditionally conservative state Legislature is nearly an even split.

Still, Arizona isn’t anything close to a Democratic stronghold.
