As far I can tell, nobody in Mexico wants Donald Trump’s trade war and would rather defuse it.

But it’s a huge mistake to think that Mexico will simply fold to Trump’s demands or face 25% tariffs on all goods coming from that country.

Mexico is ready to hit back at the United States with retaliatory tariffs of its own, and hardest hit would be U.S. automakers.

This isn’t just bravado. It’s survival for Mexico, especially now that even Canada seems willing to throw its trading partner under the bus to appease Trump.

Mexico has no choice but to talk tough, too, and strategically target states like Texas, California, Michigan, Illinois and Arizona that have the highest binational trade.

Americans cheering Trump’s plan to impose a 25% tariff on Mexican and Canadian goods have no clue how destabilizing that could be for everyone.

Voters who elected Trump over their frustration with the price of eggs and other basic groceries could end up paying a lot more for everything from cereals to paper........
