The celestial affair that made us mortal – an animated Indian myth
This short animation from 1971 adapts a traditional Indian folktale of a ‘she-Sun’ and a ‘he-Moon’ whose ill-fated love first brought death to the humans on Earth enduring ‘unbearable’ immortal existences. The Indian Canadian director Ishu Patel uses intricate and colourful animation, very few words and the transfixing sounds of the sitar and other traditional Indian instruments to tell the story. The beautifully realised film is rewarding in its own right while also calling to mind the unknowable number of myths developed........
