One day in 1943, smog descended on Los Angeles. It never really left

On 8 July 1943, there was something darker, denser and more caustic about the haze that often covered Los Angeles, California. Today, smog is considered an unwelcome yet frequent visitor, due to the city’s largely mountain-flanked geography and high vehicle emissions. However, on that Thursday in July, it was a novelty and a mystery – perhaps, many Los Angelenos thought, a Japanese attack on the homeland.
