While listening to Boz Scaggs’ 1976 classic song “Lowdown” and admiring the front of Scaggs’ “Silk Degrees” LP, a reactor on YouTube recently opined that album covers are a lost art.

She is correct. As kid No. 6 of 7, I listened to a variety of my older siblings’ albums in the ‘70s. My favorite album covers from their collections: Carole King’s “Tapestry,” for its simplicity. Just a snapshot of a young woman and her cat by the window; Earth, Wind & Fire’s “All ‘n All.” The image of a majestic pyramid drew me in right away because I was obsessed with ancient Egypt at the time; “Malo” by Malo, with a cover image of an Aztec warrior and a maiden locked in a romantic embrace atop a mountain. This glorious painting was a source of pride for a little Mexican-American boy like me; and the Rolling Stones’ “Sticky Fingers.” Jeans with an actual zipper attached to the cover was too much of a tactile temptation for a curious little kid to resist.
