FATAH: India's shame as a journalist rots in prison

When the likes of Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins reject Christianity and refer to religion as the “viruses of the mind,” are they spreading hatred or merely exercising their freedom of expression? No one yet has slapped the “hate“ label on them.

How about Hindus who either reject their faith and turn to atheism or, in the case of Indian journalist and defence analyst Abhijit Iyer-Mitra, joke about erotica carved on a Hindu temple?

Are these gentlemen guilty of spreading hate? Certainly not.

As the British sociologist James Beckford wrote in his 2003 book Social Theory and Religion, “criticism of religion is criticism of the ideas, the truth, or the practice of religion, including its political and social implications.”

Spreading hatred against a group of people, be they blacks, Jews, Arabs, Caucasians, Indians or Latinos, most certainly falls under........
